Cani-Cross
Running with your dog offers numerous health benefits for both you and your beloved canine companion. All breeds of dog need to get out for at least one walk per day, but many working dogs such as Siberian huskies, Alaskan Malamutes or Samoyeds need to get out in the fresh air far more often than this. Therefore, running with your dog is a great way to keep them in shape while also doing your own waistline a world of good. Cani-cross is fast becoming one of the most popular ways of running with dogs - so why not invest in some cani-cross equipment and give it a try?
What do I need to get started with Cani-Cross?
One of the most attractive aspects of cani-cross and running with your dog is its simplicity - purchase a few pieces of equipment and you're ready to roll. Although a simple dog lead is theoretically viable, a cani-cross harness is much safer, as it allows for freer running and avoids any problems associated with collar rub or straining. The cani-cross harness is attached to a cani-cross belt, which goes around your waist and ensures that both running parties feel secure but free.
What do I need to consider before trying Cani-Cross for the first time?
As with all forms of exercise with a dog, it is important to assess a canine's fitness levels - and your own - before running with your dog. Just as you would if you were taking up cross country running or jogging, it is a good idea to start slowly and gradually build up to longer distances. Approaching cani-cross in this way allows you and your dog to get used to each other - a canine will adjust their speed accordingly before too long. Before going running with your dog, also assess what you will need during your trips - regardless of the time of year, water will be needed for both you and your dog. Planning a route with plenty of stop-offs to fill up drinks bottles is a sensible idea.
Where can I go running with my dog?
There really is no limit to the number of places where you can go running with your dog, but it is sensible to enjoy cani-cross in open spaces where there is little chance of running into members of the public. For this reason, forests, fields and country paths are better ideas than pavements and built-up areas. It is always a good idea to check local byelaws before running with your dog somewhere - some national parks and recreational facilities can have restrictions on the presence of dogs at certain times of the year.
