About the Iditarod
The Iditarod is a long-distance sled dog race that takes place in Alaska every March. The Iditarod covers approximately 1,150 miles (depending on the weather and the route chosen that year) and the race is extremely competitive, with mushers and their teams finishing in ten to 17 days.
The Iditarod trail originally began as a supply route from the coastal towns to the mining camps in Alaska's interior wilderness. In 1925, the path became the only way to get life-saving diphtheria treatment into the area and the only means of transportation was by dog sled.
The first Iditarod race was held in 1973 to commemorate diphtheria serum runs and the 20 brave mushers - and their sled dog teams - who undertook the task.
Since then, the race has been held every year, starting in Anchorage and following the frozen and often treacherous path to Nome.
While mushers and their teams often face sub-zero temperatures, white-out conditions and gale-force winds during the Iditarod competition, they also travel across some of the most beautiful terrain in the world. Craggy mountains, vast tundra and gorgeous frozen coastlines are all part of the view that Iditarod teams - and very few others - get to enjoy.
The fastest winning time to date was set by Martin Buser in 2002, with a time of just under nine days. The Iditarod has been called the Last Great Race on Earth and it has garnered international attention.
While the majority of Iditarod racing teams are based in Alaska, mushers and their sled dogs travel from further afield too - with previous winners including competitors from as far away as Switzerland and Norway.
