Dog diet tip: Avoid ‘free feeding’

September 21st, 2009

Dog diet recommendations may vary from breed to breed but one suggestion for any pet is to avoid free feeding.

This is according to a recent article in the Lake County Leader by Angela Lamison. She said it is important to measure the amount of food the pet is given.

But table scraps and titbits can lead to it overeating, she warned.

In addition, treating it with human food could lead to the dog becoming a picky eater, the commentator said.

One method of feeding which can be popular among dog owners is to offer biologically appropriate raw foods (BARF).

In his book the BARF Diet, Dr Ian Billinghurst explained: "The further the animal’s diet departs from its evolutionary diet, the more health problems that animal is likely to develop."

Anyone with concerns about their canine may want to consult a veterinary surgeon. They can perform small procedures – such as nail clipping – to more important changes, including neutering.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19370609-ADNFCR
