Owners of sled dogs have taken part in the second annual Dryland Race organised by the Alaska Skijoring and Pulk Association.
According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, 16 competitors took part in the event on Saturday (September 26th), despite adverse weather making conditions difficult.
The race was held on a gravel trail located on the Army Corps of Engineers’ Chena Flood Control Project in Fairbanks, Alaska, with racers travelling to the halfway point and then turning around and retracing the route.
This, the news source noted, resulted in "lots of challenging head-on passing" for drivers and dogs alike.
A total of three events were held, with each featuring two classes.
In the canicross races – which were held over distances of two and six miles – the winning time for the shorter distance was 14 minutes 13 seconds, while the six-mile trip was won with a time of 42 minutes three seconds.
Elsewhere in Alaska, sled dog racers have been invited to compete in the Alaskan Malmute Working Association next month.
