Christmas treats ‘can damage dog health’

December 11th, 2009

Canine owners keen to encourage good dog health should keep Christmas treats out of reach this year.

This is the advice being offered by NorthJersey.com, which stated animals need to be kept in mind when putting up decorations for the festive season.

Anything that can be consumed and is bad for a dog’s digestive system should not be where they can access it – meaning mistletoe and lilies should be hung high rather than low.

Meanwhile, foods and drinks such as chocolate and coffee should also be hidden away, the article said.

Although some owners could be tempted to offer their canine a turkey bone on December 25th, this is never a good idea.

The article explained: "If you love your pet, then know that bones are never a good choice for a snack as they may become lodged or splinter in the digestive system."

In related dog health news, McAlester News-Capital commentator Joyce McNally underlined the importance of taking canines for regular walks.

When looking after their wellbeing in this way, she said it is important to select the right equipment – which could include a dog lead or dog harness.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19509290-ADNFCR
