Dehydration ‘biggest problem facing Iditarod sled dog teams’

December 1st, 2009

One of the biggest problems for sled dog teams running in the Iditarod is dehydration, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Human Events website, Molly Ward said friends who race in the Alaskan event pointed out this issue to her, adding it should be applied to everyday animal ownership.

She suggested it is a misconception that canines are at more risk of this medical problem during the summer rather than winter.

However, the columnist explained the signs are often harder to spot during the colder months as the dogs themselves will not feel as thirsty.

She claimed the key to avoiding illness is to know what to look out for, including sluggishness, dry mouth and gums, sunken eyes and a lack of moisture.

"Know your dog so when behaviour changes you can identify if something is wrong," Ms Ward remarked.

Next year’s Iditarod sled dog race kicks off in Anchorage on March 6th 2010.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19488926-ADNFCR
