Iditarod qualifying race ’still on despite setback’

December 24th, 2009

An Iditarod qualifying race will go on despite the death of organiser Bruce Braden.

The Knik 200, set to take place in Alaska on January 2nd and 3rd 2010, will still go ahead, despite Braden perishing in a house fire, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

Often used as a training exercise for Iditarod, the race is usually popular with rookies and those looking to have a glimpse of the course.

Race marshal Harry Caldwell suggested competitors will be keen to do their bit to support Braden’s family.

Meanwhile, trail master Lou Scrader revealed conditions for the race are the best for years.

The official told the news provider: "It would be a shame not to have this race go on."

Racers are likely to use the event to gear up for the Iditarod, which kicks off on March 6th 2010.

Lance Mackey, Jeff King, Newton Marshall, Cim Smyth and Ramey Smith are all looking for a tilt at the title.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19530439-ADNFCR
