Iditarod racer ‘proud to represent Scotland’

December 22nd, 2009

A musher planning to compete in next year’s Iditarod has said he is proud to fly the flag for Scotland at the event.

Wattie McDonald told the Press and Journal his preparations have been helped by perfect conditions in and around Stonehaven.

He revealed he is still looking for sponsorship to ensure he can take part, but is hopeful companies will come forward to support him.

Mr McDonald said the event’s organisers are "really excited" to be welcoming Scottish competitors.

Discussing his sled dog team, he said his canines are fast and strong.

The musher told the news provider: "I have to really work hard with the dogs in January to get their trust and they have to trust me if we are going to have any chance of completing the race."

Earlier this month, Mr McDonald told the Stonehaven Leader that a recent rookie meeting in Anchorage, Alaska offered plenty of sled dog care tips.

The 1,000-mile race kicks off on March 6th 2010.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19525766-ADNFCR
