January 25th, 2010

A man planning to take part in the Iditarod during the next few years has revealed competing in the Last Great Race would continue a journey that began in his living room at the age of two.

Chaplin Burgess told wltx.com he first developed an interest in mushing as a tot, when he would tie his cats up with string, sit on an upside down rocking chair and pretend to be a racer.

He now shares his love of the sport with school kids in Columbia, South Carolina, holding sessions for first-graders alongside one of his dogs, Jojo.

Discussing his plans for taking part in the Iditarod, he said it will require as much mental endurance as it does physical power.

He also revealed his unique bond with his canine squad.

Mr Burgess told the news provider: "I know their names, I know their personality, I know what the dog looks like from every angle in the dark and the daylight."

This year’s Last Great Race kicks off in March, with the likes of three-time winner Lance Mackey, Jeff King and rookie Newton Marshall among the names to watch out for.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19576778-ADNFCR
