Sled dogs’ insulation techniques discussed

January 4th, 2010

Sled dogs are able to generate enough heat to stay comfortable in a small, shielded area when out in the cold, it has been explained.

The Cumberland Times-News discussed how the animals tackle freezing conditions in events such as the 1,000-mile Iditarod race.

It stated: "Even though the dogs that pull sleds … are bred to thrive during the cold, their owners provide insulated boxes that allow them to get in out of the wind."

However, the same cannot be said for many domestic canines, meaning owners should take extra precautions in freezing weather, the column said.

Large numbers of sled dogs are set to tackle two of the world’s biggest mushing events over the coming months.

Yukon Quest kicks off on February 6th 2010 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The 300-mile race is a qualifying event for the Iditarod, which begins on March 6th 2010.

Competitors such as Lance Mackey and Hans Gatt are set to be among the big names on the starting line.ADNFCR-2611-ID-19538492-ADNFCR
