Six Iditarod mushers are carrying the memory of fallen American soldiers as they tackle the Last Great Race course.
Jeff King and Martin Buser are among the sled dog racers who have opted to wear ribbons containing the names of 100 serviceman who gave their lives for the US.
The gesture has been made in support of the 2010 Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors National Military Gathering, which is taking place this month.
It is a chance for family members of fallen soldiers to gain support and care following their loss.
Joy Berger, Alaska Airlines’ contract services administrator and Iditarod volunteer, remarked: "To help honour the memories of these fallen soldiers is such a heart-warming thing for these mushers to do. I’m sure the wives were proud and touched."
The Iditarod kicked off on Saturday (March 6th 2010) and is expected to carry on for at least a further week.
Buser and King have been joined at the event by veterans such as Lance Mackey and Ramey Smyth.
