When taking a Siberian husky on a drive, it is important to ensure the animal is appropriately restrained.
According to Windsor Star contributor Yvonne Sciacca, dogs can prove a distraction for motorists, putting their safety, and that of the animal, at risk.
Clever canines can hit the control button of a window and stick their head out – which could cause injury.
Meanwhile, some animals will pace in vehicles to get the attention of their owner while they are trying to concentrate on the road.
"The few seconds of that lack of concentration can have devastating results. Once you realise the problem and lower the window, the dog will still be in panic mode and want attention from you," Ms Sciacca remarked.
She said she uses a dog harness to buckle her canine companion into place in her vehicle for this reason.
Charity the Dogs Trust also recommends ensuring canines are suitably restrained when in cars.
Although there are no laws relating to this, the Highway Code offers tips on best practice, including using dog guards, dog harnesses and pet carriers.
