Kim Mazzucca competes at Bolt The Holt

April 25th, 2010

I travelled down to Surrey to compete with Canicross Trailrunners, in the “Bolt the Holt” race. This race had the option of 5,10,or 21k. We all chose 10k. This was an extremely well organised running event, and they kindly allowed canicrossers to take part. I ran with both my dogs again, as, though ideally Oki needs to run more on his own, Fox gets very cross indeed if I leave him behind!

The canicross runners had a separate start time, just 2 mins after the 21k runners had set off, and before the main 10k and 5k started. We had a tremendous cheering send off from the crowds, I believe some 1200 entries overall. We set off at a blinding pace, way too fast for my current fitness! and only a week after the Bodmin 10 mile. Whilst the dogs may have fully recovered, I haven’t! Anyway we were soon passing vast quantities of runners, my bell tinkling away made sure they were aware of my coming up from behind!

We had fantastic support all the way round from both spectators and runners, and as the course was made up of 5k loops,we were soon round loop one! However, the fast pace at the start meant we slowed a bit on the second for a while. but then Fox got a second wind and charged off for home, finishing in a brilliant time of 39 mins 35 secs (a good human time for a veteran let alone a dog with legs only 8 inches long!) He is such a little star, so is Oki, but for him, being a lurcher, he finds it effortless.

We got a lot of praise after the race, as did all Canicross Trailrunners, and it transpired later that I had the fastest female 10k time overall! Howz that for a jack russell!! Thank you once again Snowpaw Store for your continued support. Also to my other sponsors, Alpha Dog Foods for supplying my dogs with top class food… The Food of Champions!

Our next race is “Wiggle Thunder 10k”, May 1st… see Canicross Trailrunners website www.canicross.org.uk for more details.
