Canicross competitors are set to take their dog harnesses to an event in Maine in the US.
The Pinefield Farms Trail Running Festival kicks off in New Gloucester tomorrow (May 29th 2010) and will see runners from numerous disciplines putting their best foot forward.
Starting at 10:10 local time, the 5km canicross race has been described by organisers as an "off-road roller coaster".
Competitors can expect wide tracks, trails through pastoral farmland and forest paths. Much of the course is hilly.
"Although there are no major climbs the rolling terrain is unrelenting. The surface of the trails is mainly grass and dirt sprinkled with pine needles, pine cones, twigs and small stones," organisers said.
They added that dog owners must ensure their animals are adequately trained for the race and that all canines are kept well hydrated throughout the day.
A little closer to home, canicross competitors will be making their way along the 131-mile trail that comprises the Forces March this weekend.
The race began on Thursday (May 27th 2010) and concludes on Monday.
