Dog lovers concerned that their pet is bored with his current exercise routine have been advised to consider canicross.
Writing for the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Dawn Armstrong said taking up a new activity with a canine will not only help the animal get fit, but also boost the wellbeing of their owner.
The columnist, who works for Lake Tahoe Human Society and SPCA, offered a brief outline of canicross, explaining that it can be run with one or two canine companions.
She said that runners will need a waist belt, dog harness and bungee cord to get started.
"Remember to go slow at first to keep the fun in learning and to become more skilled without injury," Ms Armstrong remarked.
She also recommended some slightly less strenuous activities, including disc dog, which involves playing catch and fetch with a frisbee.
Dock jumping, a water-based activity, and agility games were also mentioned.
Those who wish to get active with their dog in the UK could join the Canicross Trailrunners, a group which organises races throughout the year.
