Those planning to go on a long hike with their canine should store plenty of water in their dog backpack.
According to Mountain Mail columnist Amber van Leuken, these types of animals need a regular dose of H2O, especially on hot days.
For this reason, it is a good idea to plan a route with plenty of stop-off points for filling up water bottles and bowls.
The correspondent underlined how it is also important to assess an animal’s abilities before taking them on a long trip – slow, short and steady may be the best plan of action for those not used to arduous treks.
Ms van Leuken remarked: “When you pack a snack for yourself, take one for your dog too. He’ll be burning calories at a higher rate and may need the energy boost.”
Although dog backpacking can be fun when carried out solo, it may also be a good idea to travel with a group.
For example, the Alaskan Malamute Working Association regularly holds backpacking events for its members.
