Those planning to attend events being run by the Sled Association of Scotland (SDAS) later this year may wish to invest in a new dog harness.
Writing an article for the UK-based organisation, Whyphurst Kennel’s Peter Carol stated that a good quality, correctly-fitted dog harness is "essential to get the best performance" out of an animal.
He pointed out that mushers should know if the harness is too long if the canine’s tail pokes out the end, while a piece of equipment that is too small will be uncomfortable.
When fitting a new dog harness, sled dog racers should ensure it is not too tight or loose at the neck and has adequate padding.
"In some breeds with a heavy coat, or when shedding coat, there is every possibility that you may require more than one harness," Mr Carol remarked.
SDAS’ 2010-11 season kicks off at Ford on October 30th and 31st 2010, before moving on to meetings at Borders, Tentsmuir, Culbin and Bowlands.
