Bikejoring is a dog-based activity related to skijoring, cani-cross, and dog scootering. A harnessed dog or dogs are attached to a bike via a line and pull and run ahead of a cyclist.
As with dog scootering, any type of dog that enjoys running and being active can be taught to pull, run, and bikejor. Bikejoring and dog scootering are activities that can be beneficial to the health and fitness of dogs. It can be used to provide dogs with work and exercise, without letting them off lead and endangering wild-life or livestock, or other dogs. The dog or dogs are fitted with a harness that is suitable for pulling and running in. The harness then attaches to a gang line and a bungee towline, which clips to the front of the bicycle. Many people also use a converter or antenna to help keep the lines above the front wheel, and to prevent from tangling between the wheel and forks.
SnowPaw Store is delighted to offer a Full Starter Kit, which contains all of the items you need to start bikejoring with your dog (not including the bike and the dog!)
There are an increasing number of competitive bikejor classes starting in the UK and some are often run alongside other classes for cani-cross and sled dog racing. Cani-X UK holds competitive bikejoring events between the months of September and April, and is also the host of the 15th ECF European Cani-cross and Bikejor Championships, EuroCaniX 2012 in the UK to coincide with the London Olympics.
An alternative to bikejoring, especially for use in urban and built up areas, is to attach a dog to the side of a bicycle. These side attachments are allow a dog to run beside a bicycle, rather than to pull it from ahead, so are good for dogs that do not necessarily have the confidence to run out in front, or if you have a dog that you feel would not be under control when out in front of the bike.
SnowPaw Store stocks the Walky Dog which allows your dog to run alongside you and the bike.
