Backpacking is an increasingly popular activity, allowing you to get your dog to share the rigours of the hike along with the responsibility of carrying some of their own supplies such as water and treats.  Dogs generally thrive when given a purpose or task and carrying a backpack often brings out the best in a dog.  Many dogs which misbehave on a lead may calm down when given responsibility and a purpose such as to carry a back pack.
