This was a very exciting weekend for all of us at Flint Sky. Not only were we once again heading off on a long night of driving to get to the weekend’s rally, but we were heading up for our first ever rally in Sherwood Pines Forest, at the inaugural AMWA Sherwood rally event.

However keen I was to begin my time working with sled dogs I have to admit that if you had told me four years ago I would be – voluntarily – packing up my van and heading four hours across the country to spend New Year’s Eve in the forest, I’m not sure I would have believed you.

Oh what a difference a trail makes!  

What an interesting and anticipated rally this was and the last rally event for us and many others of 2016 in the lead up the holiday season.   This year’s Crossbelts rally was the fourth AMWA Championship rally of the season and was held on the Salisbury Plain at the site of the AMWA Fun weekend, an event with such intrinsic nostalgia and fond associations throughout the Malamute community that it was with wide sweeping anticipation we all welcomed this new event.

In the years since we began mushing in the UK, I’ve never actually made the drive west to the Forest of Dean and the second AMWA rally of the year when it wasn’t pouring rain.  It was a very novel and incredibly pleasing experience, as we found ourselves driving through Gloucestershire to the forest in glowing, golden afternoon sunlight - another novelty as usually we are watching the dawn break as we arrive at the rally site.

This event marks the first official AMWA trek of the season, and is one of the most enjoyed event of the year.   This trek is well situated in November as it is a single night trek and offers three trail distances of 7.5 miles, 10 miles and 13.5 miles – the perfect early trekking distances for teams, allowing a good stretch of the legs on excellent trails at this early stage.
